Weight loss - Controversial facts
Weight loss industry is a multi-billion pound industry and as
such its often plagued by controversy. These range from controversial
diets that do more harm than good, to weight loss diet pills that
bring on heart attacks and suicidal tendencies. Politics also
plays a huge part in the weight loss and diet controversy. For
example, even though there is enough food to feed every person
in the world, there are still people who are starving to death.
What's also controversial is the strange fact that the biggest
killer in the world is no longer hunger, but obesity.
Some of the controversial weight loss facts:
- In 1960s, it was predicted that the world was doomed due to population growth and the mass starvation that humanity faced. Yet today, the biggest killer is not lack of food, but obesity!
- In developing countries, people suffer from both obesity and hunger concurrently. This is because the quality of the food they eat is mainly junk foods which provide excessive calories without much nutritional value.
- Governments are spending more to abolish hunger in the world than obesity, yet obesity is a far larger killer.
- Farmers produce enough food for everyone in the world, and yet, hunger persists because of political conflict, natural disasters and poverty.
The controversy continues when the weight loss industry has tried to address the obesity epidemic through methods which have been shown to be harm full in the long run. These have included pills such as Fen-Phen which were shown to cause heart problems, and as such, were removed from the market in 1997. Or a drug called Acomplia was withdrawn as it was shown to increase suicidal tendencies. The weight loss industry is trying very hard to address the obesity epidemic, but, what the industry may need to consider is not a magical pill, but a way to educate people to adopt a weight loss lifestyle. Recent behavioural research has shown that taking diet pills actually encourages people to eat more fatty foods and sweets. People tend to feel less guilty about eating fatty foods.
The weight loss industry has a difficult task a head as most
research have been done based on tracking a single nutrient and
does not consider contributors such as genetics and behavioural.
But one basic fact still remains, the golden rule for weight loss
is:
- Eat less and often
- Exercise
- Consume more whole grain, fruits and vegetables
- Avoid ready made meals, junk foods and drinks.

 Calories and Weight Loss
Weight loss depends on the amount of calorie intake. Calories are used by the body to perform its day-to-day functions. However, when the calories taken in is greater than the energy burnt, then the excess calories are stored as fat. The most common reasons for excessive consumption of calories are:
- Psychological
- Emotional
- Lack of knowledge
- Habit

 Weight loss plans
There are a number of VERY dangerous diet plans used to target weight loss. A dangerous, or misleading, diet is one which provides "rapid" result. Remember, in order for a diet to be effective and safe, your body needs time to adjust to the change in your lifestyle. This is because rapid dieting will almost always have health consequences, and in fact research has also shown that as soon as your body adjusts to the diet, you will start to put on weight at even a higher rate than before.
